It feels almost too fitting that 125 years later, downtown Jacksonville is standing in another moment of reinvention, with new development rising, historic buildings being restored, a new stadium on the way, and residents and businesses choosing to invest in the future of the city, much like they did after The Great Fire of May 3, 1901.

Because on that morning, no one was thinking about reinvention. A small fire broke out at the Cleveland Fibre factory, a mattress factory in LaVilla, fueled by dried moss, and within hours, wind carried it across a wooden city that had no way to slow it down. Firefighters fought it, but the flames outran them, even overwhelming the water system. By the time it ended, more than 2,300 buildings were gone and nearly 10,000 people were left without homes. Jacksonville had been erased in a single day.

But what came next is the part that still defines this city. Jacksonville didn’t hesitate. It rebuilt with intention, bringing in architects like Henry John Klutho, who helped shape a stronger, more modern downtown with buildings like the St. James Building. Brick replaced wood. Plans replaced patches. And people invested in something bigger than what had been lost.

And that’s the connection!

Because today, it may not be fire driving the change, but the spirit is the same. A belief that downtown is worth rebuilding, worth reimagining, and worth investing in. So celebrating 125 years since the Great Fire is about recognizing a pattern, a city that knows how to rebuild, and choosing, once again, to be bigger and better than before!
